David's entry into Jerusalem / Jesus' entry

Mon, 03/03/2008 - 15:12 -- James Oakley

This is a “just noticed this parallel” post.

I’ve just noticed that Luke 19:37-39 reminds me of 2 Samuel 6:16.

As he was drawing near- already on the way down the Mount of Olives- the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” (Luke 19:37-39)

As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. (2 Samuel 6:16)

Jesus enters Jerusalem || the ark enters Jerusalem
Jesus becomes king || David becomes King
The disciples celebrate || King David celebrates
The ousted leaders, the Pharisees, scorn ths celebration || The ousted leader’s daughter, Michal of Saul, scorns this celebraton.
Jesus enters the temple and sees dishonour to God || David enters the tent and offers right offerings.

The question is:... What light does this shed on either / both of those passages?

Hi James,

Is there more to be done with this parallel here?

The ousted leaders, the Pharisees, scorn ths celebration || The ousted leader’s daughter, Michal of Saul, scorns this celebraton.

I'm thinking that the Pharisees are also the sons of a deposed ruler: John 8:44.

Michal is in the position where the ruling she would have had by kinship is lost by her father's deposition, so she has to marry the new king in order to remain enthroned.

What's the call on the Pharisees? "Jesus has overcome the old leader, who is your father, but you can marry into his rule by joining his Bride."

Does that fly?

I noticed this parallel myself and set out to do a search to see what others had to say about it. Your post is the only one I've found to connect these two events. I am interested to search this out. Has more come to you in the years since you first shared this?

Hi Michelle - wow this was a long time ago! I'm afraid I've not met anything related to this since I wrote it. I still think there's something in it, and I love Steffen's comment above.
