Exodus chapter 19 is a very important chapter.
Many of us know well the story of the Passover, the Exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea.
Exodus 19 tells us where this was heading - the ultimate plan. God says, in verse 4, "I brought you to myself". God brought them out of Egypt, so that they could gather around God's presence at Mount Sinai.
The story doesn't stop at Exodus chapter 14, and the Exodus was not an end in itself. He rescued them from Egypt for himself.
This should not surprise us, of course. Throughout the plagues on Egypt, God's call to Pharaoh was "let my people go, that they may worship me".
The same is true for us Christians. Through the death of God's son (his first-born), he rescued us from sin and death. But that was not an end in itself. The story did not end at John chapter 22. It carried on into Acts chapter 1 and beyond. He rescued us for himself. His ultimate goal is to gather his people around his throne that we may worship him, and live for him as his chosen people. That was why he saved us by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
