Not to be served but to serve

Mon, 15/10/2012 - 18:43 -- James Oakley

I'd noticed that yesterday and today I was getting a lot of search engine originated hits on this website to a previous sermon I preached on Mark 10:35-45.

I wondered why, then I remembered a previous occasion when lots of people arrived here by searching for a very specific Bible passage. So I looked up the Church of England's lectionary for this coming Sunday, which is the 20th after Trinity. Lo and behold, the gospel reading is: Mark 10:35-45!

And, sure enough, I preached that sermon exactly 3 years ago.

In other news, I have it on good authority that lots of people are starting their sermon prep for Sunday 21st October as early as the Monday, or even the Sunday before.

One lesson I've learnt over the years, though, is that a sermon prepared for a particular occasion - especially for a congregation I know and love well - never seems right for another occasion. There was more of the needs of that group at that time than I realised when I wrote it. Material just doesn't translate or reuse nicely. Sorry everyone.
